Project Overview
G&V Gallagher successfully delivered a complex diversion project as part of a major new development. The works required careful planning and execution due to the site’s restricted access and proximity to live infrastructure.
The project involved the installation of a 600mm ductile iron pipeline to serve as a reinforcing main within the local network. To enable the connection, two deep shafts were excavated to a depth of 13 metres, allowing the new main to be safely installed and tied into the existing system.
Scope of Works
-
Excavation of two 13m-deep shafts within a confined urban environment.
-
Installation of 600mm ductile iron pipework, including precision alignment to existing assets.
-
Connection to the existing water network via two tie-ins to reinforce local capacity and resilience.
-
Comprehensive temporary works design and confined space management to ensure the safety of operatives and the protection of nearby structures.
-
Coordination with multiple stakeholders, including developers, local authorities, and utility providers, to maintain programme efficiency and minimise disruption.
Challenges & Solutions
Access constraints presented a significant challenge throughout the project. G&V Gallagher’s team developed a detailed logistics plan to manage equipment and material deliveries in tight working conditions.
Advanced monitoring and safety protocols were implemented throughout the shaft construction to maintain stability and meet compliance standards.
Through collaboration between our civil, utilities, and MEICA teams, we delivered the works to a high standard, on time, and with zero safety incidents.
Outcome
The completed installation provides increased resilience and capacity to the local water network, supporting the new development and surrounding infrastructure.
This project demonstrates G&V Gallagher’s expertise in deep excavation, confined space operations, and complex network diversions — capabilities that position us strongly for similar major works across the UK.
