October 20, 2025Cross-Country Pipeline Installation, Shepshed
Project Overview
Earlier this year, construction began on a 4.5km, 710mm-diameter clean water pipeline between Shepshed and Coalville. The scheme forms part of a strategic upgrade designed to enhance network resilience, support future regional growth, and secure clean water supplies during peak demand and hot weather periods.
The works involved the installation of a new trunk main through varied terrain and environmentally sensitive areas, connecting to an existing 36-inch prestressed concrete main.
On-site activity commenced in March 2025, with exceptional progress made over the past six months.
Key Achievements
-
Under-Pressure Connection:
Successfully completed a technically complex connection onto the existing 36-inch prestressed concrete main, ensuring continuity of supply throughout the operation. -
Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Crossings:
Four challenging HDD crossings of up to 250 metres in length were delivered, minimising disruption to local communities and eliminating the need for three road closures. -
Environmental Stewardship:
The HDD approach significantly reduced the impact on sensitive habitats and local ecosystems, aligning with best practice in sustainable construction. -
Project Progress:
-
100% of pipeline installation completed
-
75% of trunk main successfully pressure tested
-
Topsoil reinstatement, reseeding, and land hand-back preparations underway
-
